Some YouTube channels I enjoy watching

Recently, I have cut back in a rather big way on the content I watch on Youtube. I used to have well into double figures channels that I watched regularly (probably 50 odd) but I have become rather disillusioned with the platform in general, and have reduced that massively.

There are still a handful of channels I will tune into on a regular basis though because they are both entertaining and informative in a way I don’t get elsewhere. So I thought I would share the creme de la creme of Youtube channels that I still enjoy watching.

Tasting History With Max Miller

Tasting History is a food history channel and as something of a foodie and a nerd, I find it fascinating. The channel is very much a history first channel but using food as an interesting way to talk about the history of the world around us. The videos are very well researched, written and delivered in a way that makes history fun. I’ve always had an interest in history and this is a great way to indulge that interest.

Dr Mick

Dr Mick is a channel that uses the medium of video games to talk about mental health concepts in an open and honest way. He is a licensed therapist with a PHd in human behaviour and he puts that expertise to good use in his videos. I discovered the channel with the Horizon Forbidden West playthrough and have followed ever since. The insights gleaned from these amazing games have taught me a lot and helped me be more empathetic towards others, even when I disagree with them on a fundamental level. In short I like to think I have become a slightly better person because of this channel. Do bear in mind though that his is just one perspective (as he reminds viewers of often) so it is best to go in with an oipen mind.

NeverKnowsBest

If video game essay videos are a thing, that is what you will get with NeverKnowsBest. The videos are long but always well researched and written and offer some good insights to the history of video games, specific genres of games or even individual games, as well as lesser covered topics like the quality of romantic representation in games. Always worth a watch even if you end up disagreeing with some or all of what is said.

The Library Ladder

I like books and sometimes I like watching booktube videos, and this is one of the best booktube channels out there. The videos are very informative and extremely well delivered, and they deal with authors not often covered in booktube, both classic and contemporary. I found Guy Gavriel Kay as a result of this channel for example.

Backlog Battle

I don’t watch a lot of gaming content anymore, mostly because a lot of it is creating drama for clicks. Backlog Battle is not like that at all. They try to maintain a more positive outlook on gaming and when critiicism is needed it is always fair and constructive. They cover mostly japanese games and japanese style games on the channel and as a fan of such games their review videos are among my most trusted.

I do follow 14 channels in total but these are the cream of the crop, the channels that I will always watch a new video from, they are the only channels I would think about dropping whatever I’m doing when a new video releases. I hope you give them a chance and get something out of watching as I have.
